Recommended tech specifications to host an event on Hopin

Hopin is a CPU-intensive platform. While we do not have exact specifications, we do have recommendations to be able to host a successful event.

Processor

In simple terms, a quad-core CPU has four processing cores in a single chip. This allows the software to split the processing load between multiple cores instead of only using one at a time (in single core CPUs).
A recent quad-core CPU (such as Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen) allows you to render video, play games, browse the web, work on spreadsheets, do graphic design, and so on. Running one or two of these tasks at the same time can be done with decent performance. However, if performing several tasks at once you may find that the CPU can struggle to sustain all of them.

Hopin is video-heavy, especially if a speaker or presenter are screen sharing a video or presentation. Or, for example, an organizer streaming a video via RTMP from OBS while watching the output on Stage from the same computer. For these reasons having at least a recent quad-core processor (or higher) will minimize performance issues such as loss of quality when streaming, freezing audio and video, blurry screen shares and so on.

Internet

We recommend 30Mbps upload and download for internet speed. You can check your internet speed by using: https://www.speedtest.net/. You should also do our pre-event check to make sure you have the best experience.
The minimum you can get by with is 10Mbps upload and download, but that may impact the quality of streaming services, video, and audio.
For the very best results, at least 50Mbps upload and download speed are recommended.

Browsers

We strongly recommend using up-to-date versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 and up. Find out more in our article Browser Compatibility for online events on Hopin.

Network Connectivity

Minimum requirement

At minimum, TCP port 443 is open. Some firewall/proxy rules only allow for SSL traffic over port 443. You will need to make sure that non-web traffic can also pass over this port.

Better Experience

In addition to the minimum requirements being met, we also recommend that UDP port 3478 is open. This port is used by a piece of hardware called STUN server that helps establish the connection between the participants in the call with a firewall in the middle.

Best Experience

For the best possible experience, we recommend that UDP ports 1025 - 65535 be open. Once these ports are open, there is no need for intermediary STUN/TURN servers which removes a hop from the media traffic.

Affects audio/video on: Backstage, Sessions, and Networking

Since all segments affected make use of UDP to deliver the best video quality via media streams. When the ports are blocked, the audio/video quality will be impacted and result in: drops in quality, freezes of the stream, downscaling resolution or even audio/video being completely inaccessible as a result of very restrictive firewalls that don’t allow even TCP traffic unless whitelisted.

Our guide Network Connectivity Settings provides additional details.

Audio/Video

It is best to test your Audio/Video before the event to see how well it can handle the platform. We recommend running a Pre-Event Check. This test will check the audio and video setup to ensure all works as expected.
